Healthy Back Tips
Caring for Your Spine At Home
Proper care for your spine at home includes actions performed during daily activities, as well as weekend projects. Your home can provide many scenarios where injury is preventable with proper lifting and turning techniques.
- As you lift an object keep your back straight, use your legs to power the lift, not your back and shoulders.
- When turning, don’t plant your feet and twist your upper body. The proper technique is to keep your feet moving, and the back straight, while turning in the direction you wish to go.
- Many back injuries at home are caused by bending and twisting the spine improperly, so use your feet and legs to power and pivot your body.

- Warm up or stretch before exercising or other physical activities, such as gardening.
- Maintain proper posture.
- Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
- Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine.
- Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.
